Social Islami Bank Plc (SIBL) has issued a show-cause notice to its Deputy Managing Director, Mamun Mahmud, over allegations that he secured his job using forged academic certificates. The bank’s Human Resources Department served the notice last Thursday, giving him seven days to respond.
According to SIBL officials, the allegation of certificate forgery against the deputy managing director (DMD) came to the attention of the bank’s current administrator. When summoned to the administrator’s office, Mamun Mahmud reportedly attempted to submit his resignation. After being denied that option, he applied for five days’ leave.
Confirming that the leave request had been approved, SIBL’s Head of Human Resources Md Shahriar Khan told TIMES of Bangladesh, “We recently became aware that Mamun Mahmud obtained his job using forged certificates. He has been asked to explain within seven days.”
However, DMD Mamun Mahmud has rejected the accusation. He told TIMES, “There is a conspiracy against me. The current authority wants to hire another DMD, and this allegation has been brought to remove me.”
“I have applied to Dhaka University for verification of my certificates. I expect to receive the report by next Thursday,” he added.
It has been learnt that Mamun submitted certificates claiming to be from Dhaka University when applying for the job. But the bank’s verification found that the certificate actually belonged to Titumir College. In addition, although he obtained a third division in his bachelor’s examination, he allegedly forged it to show a second division.
According to his account, Mamun worked abroad for fifteen years before returning to Bangladesh to join the banking sector.
Documents show that he joined United Commercial Bank in 2011 as First Vice President. He later worked at Bank Asia, Jamuna Bank and Premier Bank in various positions. He joined SIBL on 21 July this year.
The Shariah-based bank, now undergoing a merger process, is currently being run under the Bangladesh Bank’s supervision through the Bank Resolution Ordinance. Bangladesh Bank Executive Director Md Salah Uddin is serving as its administrator.
On 5 November, the central bank appointed the administrator as part of its plan to merge five distressed Shariah-based banks into one large Islamic bank.
