Robust Shariah governance is crucial for Islamic banking’s growth, ensuring transparency, Shariah compliance, and public trust, experts said at a seminar on 30 March 2026 at the BIBM Auditorium in Dhaka.
Organized by Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) in collaboration with INCEIF University, Malaysia, the seminar brought together industry experts and regulators to discuss the importance of strong governance in the sector.
Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor and BIBM Executive Committee Chairperson Nurun Nahar emphasized that effective governance is vital for aligning Islamic banks with both regulatory requirements and Shariah principles, which in turn enhances the sector’s resilience.
INCEIF University ISRA Institute Director Said Bouheraoua shared insights into global best practices, highlighting the challenges Islamic banks face in maintaining Shariah compliance as they scale operations. BIBM Associate Professor Md Mahabbat Hossain presented the keynote paper, assessing current practices and proposing necessary improvements.
A panel discussion featured senior officials such as Janata Bank Director and Former Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank Abdul Awal Sarker, Independent Director & Chairman of the Audit Committee at Islami Bank Bangladesh Md Abdus Salam.
It also included Shahjalal Islami Bank Managing Director Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, Executive Director of Standards Setting Division at Financial Reporting Council Dhaka Nabil Ahmad, and Director of Islami Banking Regulations and Policy Department at Bangladesh Bank Mohammad Anisur Rahman.
The panel explored strategies for strengthening Shariah compliance and regulatory oversight within the industry.
BIBM Director General Md Ezazul Islam underscored that Shariah governance is not just about compliance, but about fostering transparency, ethical accountability, and a strong institutional culture.
He called for increased collaboration among stakeholders to support the sustainable growth of the Islamic banking sector.
The seminar concluded with a shared commitment to addressing governance challenges and ensuring the continued development of Islamic banking in Bangladesh.
