Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan says he is ready to return home, face the criminal cases against him and play a farewell international series, provided the government guarantees his safety.
The 39-year-old all-rounder, who has been living in the United States since the political upheaval in Bangladesh in August 2024, said he has nothing to hide and is willing to cooperate with the legal process.
“If I get the clearance from the government that my security will be ensured, I am happy to go back, face the court trial and everything that’s needed to be done,” Shakib told Reuters from Sri Lanka, where he is playing franchise cricket.
Shakib, a former Awami League lawmaker, faces multiple legal cases in Bangladesh, including a murder case linked to the 2024 student-led uprising and an anti-corruption investigation. He rejected the allegations and insisted he had done nothing wrong.
“I know I haven’t done anything,” he said.
The former Bangladesh captain also reiterated his desire to finish his international career on home soil and still hopes to represent Bangladesh at the 2027 ODI World Cup before retiring.
Shakib revealed he had previously attempted to return to Bangladesh in late 2024 after receiving assurances over his security. However, while travelling, he was reportedly told to turn back and eventually returned to New York after landing in Dubai.
“I don’t know what changed in 12 hours,” he said.
He also claimed another planned return collapsed after he posted a birthday message for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on social media, adding that he did not understand why it became a barrier to his return.
Shakib said he had contacted government ministries through his lawyer seeking the withdrawal of what he described as fabricated charges but had received no response. He also expressed hope of speaking directly with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman about returning home.
The veteran all-rounder admitted time was running out on his playing career.
“I am still enjoying the game and playing well. But age is not on my side, so I cannot wait for too long,” he said.
Despite spending the past two years abroad, Shakib said he remains determined to return to Bangladesh if he receives the security assurances he believes are necessary.
