The Bomb Disposal Unit of the Bangladesh Army neutralised seven powerful landmines in Chuadanga on Saturday afternoon, nearly a month after they were first discovered in a cornfield.
A 15-member team from Bangladesh Army 55 Regiment Jessore Unit carried out the operation at Skoolpara field in Makhaladanga village under the leadership of Captain Rifatul Islam.
The team destroyed the explosives through controlled detonations, triggering loud blasts, ground tremors, and plumes of black smoke, while leaving deep craters at the site.
Local residents were moved to a safe distance before the operation began.
The landmines were first discovered by Dinnathpur village farmer Hazrat Ali while digging an irrigation canal on 28 February, said Chuadanga Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman.
He struck three landmines with a spade and informed police, who immediately cordoned off the area to ensure public safety.
The army was later informed and the specialist unit reached the site on Saturday morning.
During a sweep, the team recovered four more landmines from the same location.
The explosives were then neutralised in two phases, first four devices and later the remaining three.
