Lionel Scaloni has reached agreement with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) to remain as head coach beyond December.
According to SuperDepor.com, he will sign a two-year deal to 2028 with an automatic extension to 2030 if both sides agree. The plan is for him to lead the team into the 2030 World Cup, whose opening match will be in Argentina.
After time to reflect and a meeting with AFA president Claudio Tapia during the recent FIFA window, the Pujato native agreed to stay, taking his tenure towards 10 consecutive years since 2018. Talks were wrapped up once contractual details, especially financial terms, were ironed out. So far, the AFA’s only official word is its initial note confirming talks began.
An announcement could come in the next few days, or during the 9-17 November window when Scaloni will be in the country.
Argentina will close the year with two friendlies in November as Scaloni assesses options for the next World Cup. They play Uruguay on Friday 13 at La Bombonera, time to be confirmed, then Costa Rica on 17 at the Mario Alberto Kempes in Córdoba.
Scaloni will be without Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina, suspended by FIFA for incidents after the 2026 World Cup final. Paredes has a 10-match ban with seven left, while Molina has seven with four remaining.
Lautaro Martínez is a doubt after a muscle tear and, for now, would miss out.
Scaloni took charge in 2018 and led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title and the 2024 Copa America. The 2030 World Cup will open in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, with the bulk of the tournament in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
