A Dhaka court on Monday showed the arrests of Salman F Rahman, adviser to former ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Anisul Huq, former law minister, and two others in connection with the killing of Mahfuzur Rahman during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Mirpur, Dhaka.
The other accused shown arrested are Atiqul Islam (58), former mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation, and Jasim Uddin Mollah (49), president of Awami League’s Kafrul Thana unit.
The four were produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court, where police submitted petitions to show them arrested in the case. After hearing the submissions, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Mia approved the petitions and ordered the accused returned to jail.
According to the case statement, on 19 July last year, Mahfuzur Rahman participated in a peaceful demonstration at Mirpur-10 as part of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Police and ruling Awami League activists allegedly opened fire on the protesters. Mahfuzur Rahman was shot near his right ear, and the bullet pierced through his head, killing him instantly at the scene.
Following the incident, a murder case was filed at Mirpur Model Police Station on 14 February this year. In the charge sheet, Salman F Rahman is listed as the 7th accused, Anisul Huq 8th, Atiqul Islam 20th, and Jasim Uddin Mollah 15th.
