Mohammad Saifuddin is using Bangladesh A’s upcoming tour of South Africa as an opportunity to prepare for a bigger target: next year’s ODI World Cup.
The 29-year-old all-rounder returned to Bangladesh’s ODI side during the recent series against Zimbabwe, having been away from the format for five years. He played the third ODI in Harare, taking one wicket for 31 runs.
Saifuddin has also remained involved in the T20I side. During Bangladesh’s recent T20I series against Zimbabwe, he featured in all three matches, taking five wickets. He also produced a late-innings cameo of 31 from 10 balls in the second T20I, hitting four consecutive sixes in the final over.
His next assignment is expected to be with Bangladesh A in South Africa, where he will have another chance to work on his game in conditions that are likely to be similar to those Bangladesh will encounter at the 2027 World Cup.
Saifuddin said the upcoming tour is already part of his preparations for the tournament.
“We are sharing different things and working on how we can perform well in those conditions,” he said. “Since the 2027 World Cup will be in South Africa, we are discussing how to give our best and stay fit.”
For players from the subcontinent, adapting to South Africa’s pace and bounce can be a significant challenge. Saifuddin believes joining the A team will give him valuable time to adjust.
“The conditions in South Africa will not be easy,” he said. “Since our emerging team is playing there and the four-day team will go first, I will have more time to see the conditions and prepare myself.”
Saifuddin is not dissatisfied with his recent performances but knows there is room for improvement. He has been working individually even during the current break, focusing on both batting and bowling.
“Playing well has no alternative. If you look at my recent matches, I haven’t done too badly. But there is always room to improve, and I am working towards that,” he said.
The all-rounder also acknowledged that he knows where he needs to improve to remain effective at international level.
“I know where my shortcomings are in international cricket. I am working on those areas in both bowling and batting.”
