A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 in magnitude struck off the eastern coast of Russia’s Kamchatka region on Saturday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), GFZ reported.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimated the earthquake’s magnitude to be 7.4, with a depth of 39.5 kilometres (24.5 miles), reports agencies.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning System indicated that the earthquake posed a potential tsunami threat initially before stating, “the tsunami threat… has now passed”.
No tsunami warning was issued in Japan, which is situated in the southwest of Kamchatka, according to broadcaster NHK, quoting the Japan Meteorological Agency.
