The Rupganj Water Treatment Plant project in Narayanganj is playing an important role in ensuring safe drinking water supply for the capital’s residents, said Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He said the project, once fully operational, will be able to supply 500 million litres of safe water daily to areas under the two Dhaka city corporations.
He made the remarks on Monday morning after inspecting the project site.
Mirza Fakhrul said “The project will benefit around 4.3 million people and significantly reduce dependence on underground water in Dhaka.”
He added that it will also play a key role in addressing pollution risks of the Shitalakshya River.
He further said the large water treatment plant built in Gandharbpur, Rupganj aims to treat water from the Meghna River and supply it to the two city corporations of Dhaka.
Earlier, the minister also inspected ongoing work of the PK-17 section of the project near the Sejan Point area of Dhaka–Sylhet highway in Rupshi.
Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner Md Raihan Kabir, Superintendent of Police Md Mizanur Rahman Munshi, and Rupganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer, among others, were present during the visit.
