Roma are close to signing Argentina defender Nahuel Molina after reaching an agreement with Atletico Madrid, according to reports.
The transfer is expected to be worth about 18 million euros, with bonus payments included. Personal terms have already been agreed, and the right back is set to sign a contract until 2029 once the final details are completed.
Molina joined Atletico from Udinese in 2022. During his four seasons in Madrid, he made 181 appearances, scored nine goals and provided 17 assists.
The 28 year old was an important player for Argentina during that time. He won the 2022 Finalissima and the 2024 Copa America. He also featured in two World Cup campaigns.
Despite playing 46 matches last season, Molina was no longer a regular starter under Diego Simeone. Reports say Atletico decided to place him on the transfer list as the club looks to raise money for new signings.
The Spanish side wants to strengthen its defence before the new season. A new central defender is one of the club’s top targets, with Argentina defender Cristian Romero linked with a move to Madrid.
Roma turned to Molina after failing to sign Feyenoord full back Givairo Read. His experience in Serie A made him a strong choice, having impressed during two seasons with Udinese before joining Atletico.
The move would also reunite Molina with several fellow Argentines at Roma, including Paulo Dybala, Matias Soule and new signing Santiago Castro.
If the deal goes through as expected, Molina will end his four year spell at Atletico and return to Italian football before the new season begins.
