Sukumar Barua, an Ekushey Padak and Bangla Academy award-winning luminary of Bengali children’s literature, has passed away at the age of 88.
He breathed his last at 6:55am on Friday at the JK Memorial Hospital in Gohira, Raozan, Chattogram. He had been suffering from various complex illnesses for a long time.
His daughter, Anjana Barua, confirmed his passing to the media.
Sukumar Barua was born on 5 January, 1938, in Middle Binajuri village in Raozan, Chattogram. He began his career as a fourth-class employee at the University of Dhaka in 1962. He retired in 1999 as a storekeeper.
His writings were regularly published in various children’s newspaper including Kochi-Kachar Ashor, Khelaghor, and Mukuler Mahfil.
In a career spanning nearly six decades, his notable works include Pagla Ghora, Bhije Beral, Chandana Ranjanar Chhara, Elopathari, Nana Ronger Din, Chiching Fak, Kichu Na Kichu, Priyo Chhara Shatak, Nodir Khela, Chhotoder Haat, Juktoborno, Chandanar Pathshala and Jiboner Bhetore Baire.
He was honored with the Ekushey Padak in 2017 for his special contribution to language and literature.
Additionally, the legendary rhymer was the recipient of numerous awards, including Bangla Academy Literary Award, Bangladesh Shishu Academy Literary Award and Alaol Sahitya Puraskar.
