Law Adviser Asif Nazrul has said the government will enact a referendum law within the next week.
He made the remark on Thursday during a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka following a meeting of the Advisory Council.
Responding to a question from a journalist about the progress of the law, the adviser said the process was moving quickly.
“We are going to enact the referendum law very soon. We will do it this week. Today is Thursday, so you can assume it will be done within the next three or four working days,” he said.
Just a week earlier, in an address to the nation, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus announced that a referendum on the July Charter would be held on the same day as the 13th National Parliamentary election.
He said voters would answer “yes” or “no” to four specific questions.
As the constitution does not include any provision for a referendum, the government is required to pass a separate law to conduct it.
