Tollywood is in mourning after popular actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee tragically died during a shoot at Talsari beach on the West Bengal–Odisha border. The 43-year-old actor’s sudden death has left the industry and fans stunned.
The shooting of the serial ‘Bhole Baba Par Karega’ had been progressing smoothly on the morning of March 29. Reports indicate the accident occurred in the afternoon, after the unit had begun packing up.
Initial reports suggested Rahul entered the water alone after filming, but recovered camera footage reveals he had been moving slowly towards the water holding co-star Shweta Mishra’s hand during a scene. Though the scene was confined to ankle-deep water, conditions rapidly deteriorated.
Eyewitnesses described strong winds and unusually rough waves. Shweta lost her balance and fell, and Rahul reportedly got into difficulty while attempting to help her. A large wave then struck, trapping his feet in the sand and pulling him under. Crew members rushed to his aid, launching a speedboat and entering the water themselves.
Rahul was eventually rescued, still showing signs of life. The actor was then taken to Digha Sub-District Hospital. He was declared dead upon arrival at 6:10 pm despite resuscitation attempts en route.
The initial autopsy confirmed death by drowning. Doctors found a significant amount of sand and salt water in his lungs, trachea, oesophagus, and stomach, indicating prolonged submersion. Such findings suggest Rahul was under water for a considerable period, severely reducing any chance of survival.
While Talsari falls under Odisha, Rahul was brought to Digha due to its proximity to medical facilities. Authorities from both states are now involved in the investigation. Police have seized camera footage from the shoot, which is expected to provide crucial details about the incident.
Rahul made his film debut in 2008 with ‘Chirodini Tumi Je Amar’, gaining popularity through his on-screen pairing with Priyanka Sarkar, whom he later married. The couple has a son.
He had recently appeared in web series such as ‘Academy of Fine Arts’ and ‘Thakumar Jhuli’, and was known for expressing thoughtful views on writing and socio-political issues.
Colleagues have expressed deep shock. Actress Srabanti Chatterjee revealed that Rahul had spoken to her just days before and they had plans to collaborate on projects.
Director Raj Chakraborty said, “The boy is no more. This is the most difficult thing to accept.” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed her condolences, calling his loss “irreparable” for the Bengali acting community.
