The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a man red-handed with an illegal locally made firearm and ammunition while they were being traded in Ishwardi Upazila of Pabna.
The arrestee, identified as Alam Sardar, 44, is from Syedpur village under Puthia Police Station in Rajshahi district. A locally made shooter gun, a cartridge, and a mobile phone were seized from his possession.
Acting on a tip-off regarding illegal arms trading in the area, a team from RAB-12 Pabna Camp conducted an operation in front of Bharaimari Mathalpara Government Primary School in Silimpur Union of the upazila late on Thursday night. Alam Sardar was apprehended from the spot during the raid.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and Acting Company Commander of RAB-12 Pabna Camp Dolly Rani Sarker, the suspect admitted to his involvement in illegal arms trading during initial interrogation. RAB officials further disclosed that the arrestee has multiple prior cases involving firearms and narcotics registered against him.
A case under the Arms Act was filed in this connection on Friday, and the suspect was subsequently handed over to Ishwardi Police Station. He was later shown arrested in the case and sent to prison by a court.
