PWD SC eliminated 12-time champions Dhaka Abahani Limited from the Federation Cup on Tuesday with a 1-0 win at the Bashundhara Kings Arena. Mohammad Abdullah scored the decisive goal in the 65th minute to secure the points for the underdogs. This result leaves the record winners in fourth place in Group A. PWD SC now sit second in the table and await other results to confirm their progression.
The muddy conditions at the arena significantly hampered Abahani’s offensive movement. PWD SC utilised a deep defensive block to neutralise their opponents’ superior possession. Goalkeeper Sarower Jahan provided the backbone of this resistance with several high-quality saves. Abahani struggled to find clinical finishes despite creating numerous openings in the final third.
Mohammad Abdullah capitalised on a rare second-half opening to settle the contest. Ali Uzair initiated the move before Abu Sayed beat Sushanto Tripura on the flank to cross. Abdullah struck his shot through the goalkeeper’s legs to stun the reigning runners-up. The goal forced Abahani into a desperate late surge that ultimately yielded no results.
Abahani forwards Shekh Morsalin and Al-Amin both squandered golden opportunities in the opening half-hour. Al-Amin failed to beat Sarower Jahan in a one-on-one situation following a defensive lapse. Sarower also parried Shekh Morsalin’s powerful strike as PWD maintained their composure under sustained pressure. Late substitute Mirajul Islam also missed two clear chances at the back post.
The victory moves PWD SC to six points from their four matches. Brothers Union remain top of the group having already qualified with 10 points. Abahani conclude a disappointing campaign with just one win and one draw. The club now exits the competition at the group stage for the first time in recent history.
