The interim government has officially declared August 5 as “July Uprising Day,” marking it as a public holiday across the country every year.
This announcement was made through a notification signed by Additional Secretary of the Cabinet Division, Mohammad Khaled Hasan, issued on Wednesday.
According to the notification, the government has decided to recognize August 5 as “July Uprising Day” (with a general holiday) annually and to include it as a Category-A national observance day.
Earlier, on June 25, the interim government first declared August 5 as “July Uprising Day.” In the same announcement, August 8 was declared as “New Bangladesh Day,” and July 16 as “Shaheed Abu Sayeed Day.” However, the government later withdrew the decision to observe New Bangladesh Day.
A day before that, on June 24, the government announced a 36-day-long series of events named “July Remembrance Celebrations,” to commemorate the anniversary of the historic July Uprising led by students and the public in 2024. The events span from July 1 to August 5, with intermittent breaks.
