Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) switched focus to Arsenal immediately after edging past Bayern Munich to reach the Champions League final on Wednesday night. A 1-1 draw in Munich sealed a 6-5 aggregate victory for Luis Enrique’s side.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia described the semi-final against Bayern as PSG’s toughest assignment of the season. The Georgian winger now expects another demanding contest against Premier League leaders Arsenal in Budapest on 30 May.
“Very happy we’re in the final. We know it will be difficult against Arsenal. Bayern are one of the best teams right now, it was very difficult, the hardest one of the season,” Kvaratskhelia told Canal Plus.
“We showed we can play against these teams.” PSG struck early at the Allianz Arena. Ousmane Dembele converted Kvaratskhelia’s low cutback after only three minutes. The French side then controlled long periods without dominating possession. They defended deeper than usual at times but still threatened on the break through Dembele and Kvaratskhelia.
Bayern pushed late and Harry Kane scored his 55th goal of the season in stoppage time. The goal arrived too late to change the tie. PSG held firm and secured a second straight Champions League final appearance.
Luis Enrique praised his players for handling Bayern’s aggressive pressing game. Both teams pressed high and attacked quickly through the middle, which created an open and physical contest across both legs.
“The character we showed against a team like Bayern is so positive. We’re so happy to reach a second Champions League final in a row,” Luis Enrique said.
“It was very intense. Very difficult. They play football at the highest level. Both teams are similar, we love to press high. We are very happy.”
