Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam has said that internal disagreements within the prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal will not affect the judicial process.
Responding to questions from journalists at his office on Thursday, Aminul Islam said no division, conflict or criticism would influence the tribunal’s proceedings.
“The tribunal’s work will continue. There is no risk of it coming to a halt,” he said.
The remarks come amid recent allegations raised by Prosecutor BM Sultan Mahmud against outgoing chief prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam and prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim.
Sultan Mahmud accused them of corruption and irregularities in the judicial process.
It also emerged that Tajul Islam had written to the then Law Adviser last month seeking the removal of Sultan Mahmud over allegations including leaking information, violating the code of conduct and assaulting a security guard.
The developments have sparked considerable discussion in recent days, prompting questions to the chief prosecutor.
In response, Aminul Islam said that as long as he remains in office, such allegations among prosecutors would never be allowed to influence the trial process.
“I have not learnt to compromise. No innocent person will face even the slightest harassment through me. And no offender should expect to escape justice. That is a clear message,” he said.
Drawing an analogy, he added that differences can arise even within a family, but that does not prevent the family from functioning.
“Those who work at the tribunal are members of one family. This is an internal matter and it will not affect the trial proceedings,” he said.
