Shoriful Islam, star pacer of Chattogram Royals, has finally received his full payment for the twelfth edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), ending months of uncertainty over previous dues. While the current season’s payments were cleared smoothly, Shoriful revealed that wages from the prior edition, when he represented Chattogram Kings, are still pending.
Shoriful, who played under the BCB-owned Chattogram Royals this season, received his remuneration on the first day of Ramadan, along with the rest of the squad. The pacer praised the board for ensuring timely payment but expressed disappointment that dues from last season remain unsettled.
“To be honest, this season went the best,” Shoriful said. “Previously, I had a season with Khulna Titans under Sumon Sir. Both times went very well. Last year’s, meaning the edition before this one’s payment, is still pending. Alhamdulillah, I feel very happy having received this season’s payment.”
Shoriful’s comments highlight the ongoing issue of player remuneration in domestic T20 cricket in Bangladesh, where delays from previous seasons can affect player morale despite successful on-field performances.
Asked about his views on expanding the BPL, Shoriful did not specify an exact number of teams but emphasised quality over quantity. He cited BPL champions Rajshahi Warriors as an example of a well-structured side that other franchises could emulate.
“We want the league to expand, but it should be like the team Rajshahi has built. Then everyone will be willing to play,” Shoriful added.
His perspective underlines the importance of maintaining competitive standards in the league while considering expansion to accommodate growing interest from players and fans alike.
This season, Chattogram Royals’ payments were managed by BCB after the franchise owners took a back seat.
