Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury commented that the current police force is more humane and active than before.
The adviser made these remarks during a media briefing after an Eid-ul-Adha greeting exchange and a meeting of the Core Committee on Law and Order at the Ministry of Home Affairs conference room in the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday.
The adviser stated, “During the previous government’s tenure, police were often perceived as ‘active’ only when they resorted to baton charges or physical force. But the current government does not want such policing. We want a humane police force—one that treats everyone with respect.”
He added, “Today’s police are more humane. Because they behave politely, some people mistakenly think they are not active enough. But in reality, the current police are more proactive than before.”
When asked about law enforcement agencies’ preparedness for the upcoming national parliamentary elections, the adviser replied, “The Election Commission will decide the election date. Whenever the EC announces the schedule, our law enforcement agencies will be fully prepared.”
Responding to a question regarding India “pushing in” people at the border, the home adviser said, “We have communicated with India several times through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If any of our citizens are in India, they should be returned through proper channels. However, abandoning people in forests or rivers is not how a civilized nation should behave.”
The briefing was attended by the Special Assistant to Chief Adviser Md Khuda Baksh Chowdhury, IGP Baharul Alam, and other officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
