Supporters of Gono Odhikar Parishad blocked the road near Gate No.2 in Chattogram city late Friday night, protesting the attack on their party president Nurul Haque Nur earlier in Dhaka.

The demonstrators occupied the street, lit tyres on fire, and shouted slogans demanding justice, accusing the assault of being pre-planned. They warned of launching tougher movements if action was not taken promptly.

Earlier in the evening, Nur was critically injured during renewed clashes between Gono Odhikar Parishad and Jatiya Party activists in front of the Jatiya Party headquarters at Kakrail, Dhaka.

Witnesses said an initial scuffle broke out in the evening, followed by more violent confrontations around 9:30pm. Nur, who was present near the office, sustained a serious head injury and was rushed to a private hospital by party activists.

Party sources said Nur’s head injury was severe. Law enforcement tried to break up the confrontation between the two groups, but Gono Odhikar activists resisted and also clashed with police.

To bring the situation under control, police and army personnel baton-charged both sides. In the chaos, Nur was gravely injured, sparking protests later in Chattogram.
