Stranger Things star Noah Schnapp is leaving Hawkins behind for London, where he will make his world stage debut in Affluenza.
According to Variety, Schnapp will headline the play at Riverside Studios as part of its Mainstage Season 26/27, running from 26 September to 21 November.
Written and directed by Mainstage Season artistic director Andy Sandberg, Affluenza is set among the ultra-wealthy of the Hamptons. The play explores power, privilege, family legacy, moral accountability and the American justice system.
The story follows a teenager whose drunken car ride ends in tragedy and asks whether wealth can blur the line between right and wrong. Inspired by true events surrounding a controversial legal defence, the play examines the wider impact of power and privilege.
“I am so excited to make my stage debut in London with ‘Affluenza,’” Schnapp said. He added that he wanted to choose his next project carefully and was drawn to the script and its characters. He also revealed that he will play two different roles.
Sandberg called Schnapp a “brilliant young actor” and said his decision to choose an original play for his stage debut was significant.
Affluenza will open Riverside’s Mainstage Season 26/27, which features five new plays, largely set in contemporary America.
The season will continue with Sacrilegious by Oscar-winning writer Tom Schulman and Expecting by Scott Elmegreen and Drew Fornarola. Sandberg will direct both productions.
Tickets for Affluenza are now on sale.
