The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed concern over scattered political clashes and fatalities across the country ahead of the 13th national parliamentary election, warning that such incidents could undermine public safety, human rights, and confidence in the electoral process.
The commission said any disruption to a peaceful election environment threatens the country’s democratic process and citizens’ fundamental rights.
It stressed that avoiding violence and maintaining peaceful coexistence are essential for free, fair and credible elections.
It says, voting is a citizen’s right, and elections should take place in a celebratory and secure atmosphere.
The NHRC emphasised that no individual or group should use conflict or coercion to infringe on this right.
The commission urged the Election Commission and all relevant authorities to take effective measures to prevent clashes. Special attention should be given to ensure minority communities and small ethnic groups can exercise their voting rights without obstruction.
Law enforcement personnel assigned to election duties were also reminded to avoid excessive use of force and to perform their responsibilities with respect for the law and human rights.
The NHRC called on all political parties, candidates, and workers to act with restraint and responsibility, maintaining mutual respect and tolerance to protect citizens’ rights, ensure security, and uphold Bangladesh’s democratic process.
