Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Monday said the government will implement a new pay scale for public servants this year, although more discussions are needed before taking a final decision.
He made the remarks after a meeting at the Finance Ministry in the Bangladesh Secretariat to review the judicial pay scale.
Khosru said the government would announce the full decision after completing discussions on various aspects of the National Pay Commission’s recommendations.
“We had a long discussion (today), and more discussion is needed. It will happen in time, certainly within this year,” he told journalists.
The finance minister said the meeting discussed one aspect of the proposed pay scale, while other issues would be reviewed before the government reaches a final decision.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman, Prime Minister’s Adviser on the Ministries of Finance and Planning Dr Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, and Finance Secretary Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder attended the meeting.
A day earlier, Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar said a new pay scale for public servants could be announced “at any moment”.
A new Pay Commission was formed in 2025, 12 years after the Eighth Pay Commission was established in 2013.
