The 1986 animated classic Transformers: The Movie is returning to cinemas with a new 4K theatrical release on 17 September through Fathom Entertainment in partnership with Hasbro, writes Deadline.
Directed by Nelson Shin, the film featured iconic voice performances from the late Orson Welles as Unicron, Robert Stack as Ultra Magnus, and Leonard Nimoy as Galvatron.
The announcement came during Comic-Con, where fans also got a first look at an all-new post-credits sequence.
The new theatrical version will include an exclusive addition to the original film. Tickets for the screening will go on sale from 7 August.
The re-release forms part of Hasbro’s “Apology Tour”, a year-long campaign that acknowledges the emotional impact of Optimus Prime’s death in The Transformers: The Movie.
Peter Cullen voiced the legendary Autobot leader in the film.
The 4K release will arrive in cinemas across the UK and Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and Germany, with more international markets expected to join later.
Ahead of the theatrical return, fans can also revisit the film’s music through The Transformers: The Movie: The Soundtrack: The Reformatted Edition.
The album is now available on major streaming platforms and vinyl, featuring a new single, “Nothing’s Gonna Stand In Our Way” by Sebastian Bach.
Released during the peak popularity of Hasbro’s Transformers toys, the original film arrived in 1986 through De Laurentiis Entertainment Group and earned $5.8 million in North America.
Years later, Paramount expanded the franchise with live-action and CGI adaptations. Its animated feature Transformers One earned $129.4 million worldwide, including $59 million in the domestic box office.
