The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has launched an email-based one-time password (OTP) service to make online income tax return submission easier for Bangladeshi citizens living abroad.
In a recent directive, NBR said e-return submission is now compulsory for most individual taxpayers, excluding those aged 65 and above, persons with disabilities, non-resident Bangladeshis, and foreign nationals employed in the country.
While expatriates are exempt from mandatory online filing, many still prefer using the digital system as it automatically generates acknowledgment receipts and printable tax certificates. However, they often faced problems completing registration because the portal previously sent OTPs only to local mobile numbers linked to biometric data.
To fix this, NBR will now send OTPs directly to verified email addresses of taxpayers residing overseas. Those interested must email their passport and national ID numbers, visa page, photo, and active email address to [email protected]. Once verified, NBR will send the OTP and registration link to complete the process.
Taxpayers are not required to upload any documents online but must preserve all records supporting their declared income, expenses, assets, and liabilities.
NBR reported strong engagement this year, with over 850,000 income tax returns already filed online for the 2025–26 fiscal year. The authority has urged all taxpayers—both at home and abroad—to submit their returns by November 30, 2025.
