Bangladesh Navy observed World Hydrography Day-2026 on Monday through various programmes.
A seminar was organised at the Multipurpose Hall of BNS Dhaka to mark the day, according to an ISPR press release
Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam attended the event as the chief guest, while Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nazmul Hassan was present as the special guest.
Members of various maritime organisations, senior government officials, experts in hydrography and oceanography, university teachers and students, and representatives of research organisations also attended the seminar.
This year’s World Hydrography Day-2026 is being observed with the theme “Transforming How Ocean Data is Shared”.
The theme highlights the important role of hydrography in modern, integrated and effective management of ocean-related information.
Hydrographic data plays a vital role in ensuring the safe movement of domestic and international vessels, sustainable use of marine resources, development of the blue economy and preparation of ocean-based plans.
At the seminar, speakers emphasised the importance of ensuring safe, sustainable and optimal use of ocean resources through proper management and effective exchange of marine information.
Discussions were also held on marine research, environmental conservation, coastal development, marine data management and technology-based modern hydrographic activities.
Hydrographic information continues to make significant contributions to marine environmental protection, resource management, extraction of fisheries and mineral resources, coastal land management, maritime boundary determination and marine research.
Through modern technology and exchange of expertise, Bangladesh and other coastal countries will be able to make ocean regions safer, more sustainable and productive.
Bangladesh became the 70th member of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) in 2001. Since 1983, Bangladesh Navy has been conducting hydrographic surveys in the country’s maritime areas and river routes adjacent to seaports, as well as publishing internationally standard nautical charts.
Alongside printed charts, these charts are now also being published electronically, playing an essential role in ensuring safe navigation of domestic and international vessels.
Bangladesh is serving as the Chair of the North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission (NIOHC) for the 2025-2027 term.
The 25th conference of the commission was successfully held in Chattogram in May 2026 under the management of Bangladesh Navy.
Meanwhile, the process of adding the modern marine survey and research vessel ‘HMS Enterprise’ from the United Kingdom to the Bangladesh Navy is underway.
The vessel will further enhance the country’s hydrographic survey, marine research and maritime data collection capabilities.
