Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami, Mia Golam Parwar, has stated that if the government does not implement the July Charter and the Proportional Representation (PR) system, the country will face a major catastrophe. He said that under the existing system, people have sacrificed their lives for elections. If the previous system remains, fascists will emerge again.

He made these remarks at a rally held near the southern gate of Baitul Mokarram Mosque in the capital at 5pm on Thursday. The rally was organised with five demands, including holding the national election based on the July Charter in the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Elections in February.

Golam Parwar said that although the government had previously made commitments, it has now backtracked from those positions. He alleged that the government is trying to deceive the people under some special pressure.

He urged the government not to mislead the people and to quickly implement reforms, the July Charter, and the PR system to hold elections.

The rally was presided over by Nurul Islam Bulbul, Ameer of Dhaka Metropolis South of Jamaat. Among others, the party’s Assistant Secretary General AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad and Rafiqul Islam Khan also spoke.

After the rally, a protest procession was taken out. The procession started from the southern gate of Baitul Mokarram Mosque, passed through Paltan intersection, the National Press Club, and the Fisheries Building, and ended at Shahbagh.
