Namibia pulled off one of the biggest shocks in their cricketing history, defeating South Africa by four wickets in a dramatic finish to the only T20I at the FNB Namibia Cricket Ground on Saturday.

Chasing a modest target of 135, the hosts held their composure to seal victory off the final delivery, sparking wild celebrations among the home supporters. The win marks Namibia’s first-ever T20I triumph over a full-member side, a defining moment for their cricketing journey.

Skipper Gerhard Erasmus led from the front with both bat and ball, while left-arm seamer Ruben Trumpelmann spearheaded a disciplined bowling effort. Electing to bat first, South Africa struggled for fluency on a sluggish surface and were restricted to 134 for 8 in their 20 overs.

Trumpelmann was outstanding with the new ball, taking 3 for 28 and removing key batters Reeza Hendricks and Rubin Hermann. Young pacer Max Heingo impressed with 2 for 32, including the crucial wicket of captain Donovan Ferreira, while Erasmus chipped in with his off-spin, dismissing Quinton de Kock for just one.

For the visitors, J Smith (31 off 30) and Lhuan-dre Pretorius (22 off 22) offered brief resistance, but Namibia’s tight bowling ensured the Proteas never built momentum.

Namibia’s chase wobbled early at 28 for 2 as Nandre Burger and Gerald Coetzee struck with pace and precision. Erasmus contributed a steady 21 off 21, before Zane Green’s composed unbeaten 30 off 23 guided the hosts home. Trumpelmann returned to finish the job, scoring 11 not out off 8 balls as Namibia reached 138 for 6 with one ball to spare.

Burger was South Africa’s most effective bowler, claiming 2 for 21, while Andile Simelane and Bjorn Fortuin took two wickets each. But it was Green’s boundary off the final delivery that sealed an unforgettable victory, a moment that will be remembered as a milestone in Namibian cricket history.
