The Ending Writes Itself has become one of this year’s biggest mystery novels and earned a place on The New York Times bestseller list. But its greatest mystery was never inside its pages. It was the identity of its author. That mystery has now been solved, with bestselling writers V.E. Schwab and Cat Clarke revealing they secretly collaborated on the novel under the shared pseudonym Evelyn Clarke.
Fantasy powerhouse V.E. Schwab, best known for The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and the Shades of Magic series, joined forces with thriller author Cat Clarke, whose acclaimed books include The Girls I’ve Been and Girlhood, to create the novel while keeping their identities hidden.
The novel follows six struggling writers invited to a remote Scottish island by reclusive literary legend Arthur Fletch, only to discover he has died before completing his final manuscript.
The publisher has described The Ending Writes Itself as a “propulsive debut mystery”, while Stephen King has called it a contender for the year’s best mystery, comparing its appeal to the timeless works of Agatha Christie.
The book is available now, but for many readers, the final twist arrived after publication, when the identity of “Evelyn Clarke” was finally revealed.
