Mohammedan Sporting Club have been dealt a setback as Uzbek midfielder Muzaffar Muzaffarov prepares to leave the club midway through the Bangladesh Football League (BFL) season.

The first phase of the league concludes tomorrow and the day after, with defending champions Mohammedan set to face Brothers Union at the Birshreshtha Flight Lt. Matiur Rahman Stadium in Munshiganj. The team will now have to navigate the closing rounds without one of their key performers.

In a Facebook post, Muzaffarov said: “I have been at Mohammedan for four and a half years. Together we have won so much. I am proud to have been part of this club and to have made many records and history. I thank everyone for everything. I am leaving the club due to family reasons. I will never forget Mohammedan.”

Muzaffarov was instrumental in Mohammedan’s league title win last year. Even after long-time captain Suleman Diabate departed ahead of this season, he remained with the club, despite facing irregular payment issues. He continued to deliver for the team, including assisting Samuel Boateng’s goal in his most recent match against Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society.

With the season’s remainder still to play, Mohammedan now face a difficult challenge. After eight matches, they sit sixth in the table with nine points, having won only two games and failed to secure a win in their last three outings. Losing Muzaffarov adds to their difficulties, further complicated by an ongoing transfer ban.
