Scotland claimed their first T20 World Cup victory on Monday at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, overpowering Italy by 73 runs after George Munsey’s explosive half-century set the tone and Michael Leask finished the job.
Italy won the toss and chose to field, but Munsey and Michael Jones tore into the new ball. They stretched the field, punished width and ran hard, building a 126-run opening stand that broke Italy’s plans early.
Munsey dictated the tempo with clean striking and smart placement. He smashed 84 from 55 balls, finding the fence 13 times, and forced Italy to chase shadows rather than impose pressure.
Jones played the ideal foil, rotating strike and cashing in when bowlers missed length. His 37 from 30 balls kept Scotland ahead of the rate even after Munsey fell.
Brandon McMullen and Richie Berrington then shut the door. They added 48 runs with calm control, ensuring Scotland never lost momentum through the middle overs.
Leask supplied the late surge Italy desperately wanted to avoid. He launched 22 from five balls at the death, while McMullen stayed unbeaten on 41 from 18, lifting Scotland to 207.
Italy’s reply never settled. They lost three wickets inside 40 runs and spent the rest of the chase trying to recover rather than attack.
Harry Manenti and Ben Manenti offered brief resistance with a 73-run stand. Harry struck 37 from 25 and Ben followed with 52 from 31, but Scotland sensed the moment and squeezed hard.
Leask turned the screw with the ball. He grabbed four wickets for 17 runs, using changes of pace to kill Italy’s hopes.
Mark Watt chipped in with two wickets, while Brad Currie and Oliver Davidson struck once each. Italy collapsed to 134 all out in 16.4 overs.
