Moulvi Tea Estate has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with London Tea Exchange (LTE) to establish the world’s first Model Tea Estate (MTE) in Bangladesh.
This initiative focuses on fair pay, sustainable tea cultivation, and ethical production practices, the company said in a press statement on Friday.
Under the MoU, Moulvi Tea Estate will handle local implementation and community development, while LTE will provide strategic guidance and access to global markets. The MTE aims to promote ethical trade, fair wages, and environmentally responsible practices.
The MoU was signed by Moulvi Tea Estate Managing Director Nizamuddin Hasan Rashid and London Tea Exchange Group Chairman Sir Sheikh Aliur Rahman in Moulvi Bazar.
The Model Tea Estate will operate under the Global Fair Pay Charter, developed with the Fair Pay Foundation and United Nations Institute for Training and Research, aiming to align Bangladesh’s tea sector with international sustainability standards.
The signing ceremony was attended by H R M Dom Duarte Pio de Bragança, Head of the Portuguese Royal House, among other distinguished guests.
Nizamuddin Hasan Rashid said, “This partnership sets a global benchmark for fairness and sustainability in Bangladesh’s tea industry.”
Sir Sheikh Aliur Rahman added, “The Model Tea Estate will demonstrate how fair pay and responsible business practices can create lasting global impact.”
The event was also attended by Sir Armando Jorge Lucas Calado GCSM, Ambassador for Portugal for the UN Global Fair Pay Charter, and other officials from London Tea Exchange.
