A 25-year-old woman allegedly suffocated her four-year-old son to death before attempting to commit suicide at Atgharia upazila in Pabna district on Tuesday night.
The incident took place around 11:45pm at Bharatpur Dakshinpara village under Chandva union of the upazila. The deceased was identified as Tawhid, 4, son of Tutul Islam, an expatriate who has been working in Singapore for the last two years.
According to local and family sources, the mother, identified as Mukta Khatun, first killed her son by smothering him with a pillow inside their room. Following the act, she attempted to end her own life by hanging herself from a ceiling fan.
Family members, upon sensing the situation, rescued Mukta and rushed her to Pabna General Hospital. As her condition deteriorated, she was later transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Locals alleged that Mukta had been involved in an extramarital affair with a youth named “Hridoy” for the past two years. It is suspected that the incident may have resulted from a dispute with either her husband or her lover.
Atgharia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Nazmul Huq confirmed the matter, stating that police have recovered the child’s body and sent it to the Pabna General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
The OC added that primary investigations suggest the incident might be linked to the alleged extramarital relationship, and a police investigation is currently underway to uncover the actual cause behind the tragedy.
