A mother and her three-year-old daughter were killed in a wild elephant attack in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
The incident took place around 5am in Syed Colony of West Khuniapalong under Khuniapalong union.
The victims were Chemon Ara, 25, wife of Ekram Mia, and her daughter Asma Bibi.
Local residents said a herd of three wild elephants entered the settlement in the early hours, damaging boundary walls and uprooting trees, causing panic among villagers.
Eyewitness Belal Uddin said Ekram Mia and his family ran outside after hearing the noise. He managed to escape with his six-year-old son Rehan Uddin, but the mother and younger child were attacked and killed on the spot.
Bangladesh Forest Department Cox’s Bazar South Forest Division Dhoapalong Range Officer Md Tosaddek Hossain said forest officials rushed to the scene and drove the elephants back into the forest.
He said steps are being taken to monitor elephant movement in the area.
Ramu Police Station Inspector Investigation Md Farid said police visited the spot and later handed over the bodies to the family.
Ramu Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Fazle Rabbani Chowdhury said the administration will provide necessary support to the affected family.
