A platform named ‘Moncho-24’ has placed six-point demands calling for immediate measures to ensure safe road and waterway transportation across the country.
The organisation warned that if the demands are not addressed, it will mobilise the public in a nationwide “Safe transport movement.”
Speaking at a press conference in front of Madhur Canteen at Dhaka University on Friday, Moncho-24 convener Fahim Faruki, highlighted the ongoing transportation crisis in the country, citing a series of deadly accidents caused by mismanagement and negligence.
He stated that more than 20 major accidents, including the recent tragedies in Daulatdia, have resulted in multiple fatalities.
“These are not mere accidents-they are the outcome of extreme mismanagement and irresponsibility,” Faruki said. He also criticised the government for offering only Tk25,000 in compensation to victims’ families, stating, “The value of human life cannot be measured in money. A coordinated, humane, and responsible initiative is needed to support affected families.”
Addressing the case of Hadi’s murder, Faruki noted that while the arrest of the perpetrators is a positive step, the government has yet to take visible action to bring them back to Bangladesh and ensure the judicial process is completed.
Lt Colonel Ferdous Aziz, adviser to Moncho 24, added that the information about the suspects crossing the border after Hadi’s murder appeared to be a staged narrative.
“Although the current government is not directly responsible for the murder, it is obligated to ensure the perpetrators are returned and brought to justice,” he said.
The organisation demanded that the suspects in Hadi’s murder be brought back to Bangladesh and placed on trial within 15 working days, and that an independent high-level judicial investigation commission be formed immediately.
It also called for an investigation into how the suspects crossed the border, identifying their collaborators and making arrests, along with forming a special legal expert cell to prevent delays in prosecution under India’s UAPA law.
The group further urged the government to announce a visible roadmap for returning the suspects within the specified timeframe.
Faruki concluded by warning that if the government fails to implement these measures, Moncho 24 would mobilise citizens in a nationwide campaign to ensure justice.
