Dhaka Capitals secured Mohammad Mithun in a heated auction on November 30 for the 12th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Winning a bidding war among three franchises, Dhaka acquired him from the ‘B’ category for 5.2 million BDT. This season, the franchise has also entrusted him with the captaincy.
Ahead of the BPL, Dhaka officially began their training on Sunday at the Purbachal Cricketers Academy. Before the first session, CEO Atik Fahad placed the captain’s cap on Mithun’s head at the team huddle.
Mithun, who led Chattogram Kings to the final last season, said after taking charge of his new team, “They have considered me capable and given me a big responsibility. I will give my best to keep this team united and focused on our ultimate goal.”
Despite having national stars like Taskin Ahmed and Saif Hasan in the squad, Mithun was chosen as captain. When asked why, CEO Atik explained that several players were equally capable of leading the team, making the decision difficult.
“Atik said, “All our players are capable of captaining. You have Saif, Taskin, Imad Wasim, and many others. Our management and coaching panel had a hard time deciding who should lead.”
However, Mithun’s success last season was decisive. He guided Chattogram Kings to the final with consistent performances, though they lost to Fortune Barishal.
Dhaka Capitals are hopeful that Mithun can help them overcome last season’s unfinished business. “Mithun led his team to last year’s final. Since we aim to win the trophy this year, our coaching panel decided to give him the captaincy. We are confident that, just as he took his team to the final last year, he will lead us to the title this season, Inshallah,” Atik said.
