A mild earthquake jolted parts of northern Bangladesh, including Rangpur and surrounding districts, this afternoon.
The tremor, which struck at approximately 3:10 pm local time, was measured at a magnitude of 4.5 by India’s National Center for Seismology (NCS), while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded it at 4.4 on the Richter scale.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that the epicentre was located in Bilasipara, in India’s northeastern Assam state. The quake originated at a relatively shallow depth, which likely caused stronger shaking in areas near the Bangladesh-India border.
Residents in Rangpur and neighbouring districts reported brief shaking that lasted only a few seconds.
Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage in Bangladesh following the earthquake.
Authorities from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department and other relevant agencies are closely monitoring seismic activity in the region.
