A Rangpur court on Sunday placed a medical student on a one-day remand in a case filed over the alleged abetment of the suicide of a Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) candidate who died after falling from the rooftop of a hotel in Rangpur city.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Rashed Hossain passed the order after police produced Shahriar Ahmed Sakin, a student of Rangpur Medical College, before the court with a plea seeking a three-day remand.
The court also rejected a bail petition filed on behalf of the accused.
The case stems from the death of Nuzhat Jahan, an HSC examinee, who died on 22 June after falling from the rooftop of the Northview Hotel in Rangpur.
Her father, Nazrul Islam, later filed a case with Kotwali Police Station, accusing Sakin, who had been her private tutor, of instigating his daughter to take her own life.
Police subsequently arrested the medical student in connection with the case.
Advocate Abu Haider Md Abdul Mubin, counsel for the plaintiff, told the court that mobile phone records showed Sakin and Nuzhat had spoken for 50 minutes and 12 seconds at around 3:30am on 16 June.
He further claimed that the two had spoken by phone 118 times and exchanged text messages over the past three months.
The lawyer argued that such frequent and lengthy late-night conversations were inappropriate between a private tutor and his female student, and urged the court to allow further investigation.
