Professor Md Abdul Baset Mia of Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU), former Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, has been elected President of the Bangladesh Society of Plant Science and Technology (BSPST) for the 2026–2028 term, while Professor Md Almagir Hossain of Bangladesh Agricultural University has been elected General Secretary, said in a press release.
The election of the BSPST’s third executive committee, representing a professional body of crop plant science graduates, teachers, researchers and practitioners, was completed through a formal process initiated on 3 June 2026, ensuring procedural compliance and continuity of leadership within the organisation.
Other office bearers include Vice Presidents Professor Sripoti Shikdar and Md Sazzadur Rahman, Joint General Secretaries Professor Md Mahbub Islam and Professor Md Masudur Rahman, Treasurer Professor Md Nesar Uddin, Publication Secretary Professor Kamrun Nahar, Joint Publication Secretary Professor Dibesh Das, and Seminar and Cultural Secretary Professor Md Sabibul Haque.
The executive committee members are Professor Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Professor Dr Md Habibur Rahman Pramanik, Professor Md Moniruzzaman Bahadur, Professor Md Abdul Kaiyum, Mosammat Salma Parvin, Md Mosharaf Hossain, Mira Rani Das, Haider Iqbal Khan, Md Shariful Islam, Babul Akter and AFM Shamim Ahsan.
Newly elected President Professor Md Abdul Baset Mia said, “Plant science is not merely an academic discipline; it is a foundation of food security, agricultural sustainability and future development. We will work collectively to establish BSPST as an effective platform for knowledge, research and professional excellence. One of our key commitments will be to develop young scientists and ensure research outcomes reach the field level.”
The BSPST aims to build a professional network among plant science practitioners, promote research and innovation, and support the professional development of plant scientists. It also focuses on addressing national and global agricultural challenges through training and skill development initiatives, along with journals, magazines, awards, scholarships and certification programmes.
Professor Dr Md Abdul Baset Mia, a crop botanist and author from GAU, has contributed to agricultural education through books including A Textbook of Embryology and Reproductive Structure of Crop Plants, Morphology and Taxonomy of Crop Plants, and Nutrition of Crop Plants.
