The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has advised the country’s four maritime ports to hoist local cautionary signal number 3 following the formation of a low-pressure area in Bay of Bengal.
The warning was issued on Sunday night. However, meteorologists believe there is a low probability of this low-pressure area intensifying into a depression, and it is unlikely to cause heavy rainfall.
Rainfall is expected to increase on Monday, particularly in the coastal regions, while the capital Dhaka may see some light rain between afternoon and evening.
Md Omar Faruq, a meteorologist at the Meteorological Department, told the media this morning that the low-pressure area is currently situated over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas.
Under its influence, coastal areas are likely to experience occasional rainfall, which may increase slightly and bring temporary relief. Earlier this month, two depressions formed in the Bay but did not result in significant rainfall.
Meanwhile, in a warning issued by Storm Warning Centre on Sunday, fishing boats and trawlers in North Bay of Bengal have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice. The warning added that squally weather may blow over the maritime ports, North Bay, and the coastal areas of Bangladesh due to the influence of the low-pressure system.
Consequently, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra maritime ports have been directed to hoist local cautionary signal number 3. Meteorologist Omar Faruq noted that the current low pressure is unlikely to have any major impact on Bangladesh.
He added that rainfall may increase next Sunday, with the possibility of another low-pressure area forming two days after that.
According to the weather bulletin, temperatures on Monday may drop slightly compared to Sunday.
