A local court has sentenced a man to death for the murder of a pregnant woman in Pirgonj, Rangpur.
Judge Fazle Khoda Md Nazir of the Senior District and Sessions Judge Court delivered the order around 11am Monday.
The victim, Santana Begum, 30, was an employee of Ha‑Meem garment factory in Ashulia, Dhaka. The convict, Masud Mia, also worked at the same factory.
Court police inspector Aminul Islam said authorities recovered the decomposed body of the woman on 13 July 2023 from a sugarcane field, where the body of a baby was also found nearby.
Pirgonj Police Station’s Sub‑inspector Nazrul Islam filed a case against several unidentified individuals. Following a RAB operation, Masud was arrested in Taraganj, Gazipur. He confessed to the crime and gave a statement under Section 164.
SI Mostafa Kamal of the same police station submitted the charge sheet against Masud on 31 July 2024. After testimony from 14 witnesses, the judge sentenced Masud to death and imposed a Tk20,000 fine.
Public Prosecutor Aftab Uddin said, “Justice has been delivered in this case. No one can commit such incidents again.” He also called for swift execution of the sentence.
Defence lawyer Sultan Ahmed Shaheen said: “We will appeal after analysing a copy of the full verdict.”
