A man was beaten to death on Friday night during an arbitration meeting over a financial dispute at Shankarchandra in Chuadanga Sadar upazila.
The deceased was identified as Alim Uddin, 55, son of Jharu Mondal.
Quoting the victim’s brother Kalu Mondal, Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, stated that Arif, son of Liaquat Ali, had borrowed Tk14.17 lakh from Zia, son of Golam Rasul, for business purposes.
Despite repeated promises, the debt remained unpaid.
A fresh arbitration was convened at 8pm on Friday at the residence of Shankarchandra Union Parishad Chairman Mahiul Alam Sujon.
While Zia and his uncle Alim Uddin were present, Liaquat Ali, his son Alamin, and Arif’s son Arafat arrived and allegedly beat Alim Uddin mercilessly.
He was declared dead upon arrival at a local hospital.
Chuadanga police have arrested Liaquat Ali and brought the situation under control.
