Police have arrested a man for allegedly murdering his wife and mother-in-law following a family dispute in Dhaka’s Kalabagan area on Sunday. The arrestee has been identified as Md Hridoy alias Shipon, 30.
According to Kalabagan Police Station sources, the murders took place on Sunday on the fifth floor of a house on Alamin Road.
Shipon had married the victim approximately five years ago, and the couple had reportedly been experiencing domestic discord over trivial matters since the beginning of their marriage.
On Sunday morning, Shipon became involved in another altercation with his wife. During the argument, he reportedly fetched a sharp vegetable-cutting knife from kitchen and slit her throat.
When the victim’s mother attempted to intervene to save her daughter, Shipon attacked her as well, inflicting multiple stab wounds to her throat and shoulder with the same knife.
The victim’s brother, Yeamin, witnessed the incident and alerted other relatives. Shipon subsequently attempted to flee the scene with his one-year-old child.
However, Kalabagan police apprehended him at approximately 5pm that afternoon and recovered the sharp knife used in the homicides.
A murder case has been registered against the accused at Kalabagan Police Station. The process to produce the arrestee before the court is currently underway.
The details were confirmed in a press release issued by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Niaz Mehedi.
