Malaysia has called for a new phase in its relationship with Bangladesh, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urging both countries to expand cooperation beyond traditional trade and investment into research, science, technology, semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI).
Speaking at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at Perdana Putra in Putrajaya on Monday, Anwar said these emerging sectors would play a crucial role in addressing future challenges and creating new opportunities for both nations.
According to UNB, the Malaysian prime minister said the two countries should pursue a comprehensive partnership covering all sectors. “We are looking at a comprehensive partnership in all fields,” he said, stressing the importance of innovation and advanced technology in strengthening bilateral ties.
Anwar said Malaysia and Bangladesh would continue to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment promotion, culture, counterterrorism and research. He noted that Bangladesh’s large market and strong economic potential offer significant opportunities for deeper engagement.
He said both countries should boost bilateral trade and investment while expanding cooperation into new sectors beyond agriculture, including energy, advanced manufacturing and semiconductor industries.
On labour migration, Anwar described Bangladeshi workers as an important contributor to Malaysia’s economy. He said the two governments had agreed to work closely to establish a more transparent and fair labour migration system that protects the rights and interests of workers and their families.
The leaders also discussed cooperation in the petroleum sector, education, culture and tourism, alongside efforts to strengthen broader economic relations.
Anwar said Bangladesh and Malaysia would continue working together to address the Rohingya refugee crisis. He said both countries would engage with Myanmar and relevant ASEAN mechanisms in pursuit of a sustainable solution.
On international issues, he said Dhaka and Kuala Lumpur share similar positions on Palestine and support efforts to promote peace and stability in conflict-affected regions.
The Malaysian prime minister expressed confidence that stronger cooperation would further deepen the longstanding friendship between the two countries and deliver mutual benefits for their people.
At the outset of his remarks, Anwar thanked Tarique Rahman for accepting his invitation and choosing Malaysia for his first official foreign visit since taking office.
