Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) member Professor Abdullah-Al-Mamun has said initiatives have been taken to modernise the madrasah education curriculum and make it more aligned with the job market.
“ A work plan will be finalised to ensure employment opportunities for madrasah students, enhance their skills and create job opportunities at home and abroad. Steps will also be taken to implement the plan within this month,” he said at a workshop on Monday.
The workshop titled “Improving the Quality of Higher Education and Employment in Madrasahs” was organised by Islamic Arabic University to improve the quality of madrasah education and expand employment opportunities for students.
Speaking as the chief guest, Mamun said one of the key objectives of government initiatives for madrasah students was to make the curriculum job-oriented, ensure employment and develop their skills.
“Through these initiatives, the government wants to create opportunities for madrasah students to work both at home and abroad,” he said.
Madrasah students are an important part of the government’s development vision, Mamun said, adding that while the previous government focused on infrastructure development, the current government was prioritising human resource development.
He said improving the prospects of madrasah students was part of the government’s electoral commitment.
The UGC member said the government wanted to reduce the gap in skills and opportunities between madrasah students and students from other education streams.
He said a comprehensive bottom-up approach had been adopted to modernise the madrasah curriculum.
Islamic Arabic University Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Abu Zafar Khan chaired the workshop.
University Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Mohammad Shahidul Islam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Mohammad Yunus Hindi and other officials attended the event as special guests.
The workshop also discussed providing madrasah students with opportunities to learn a third language and involving them in skill development programmes initiated by the UGC.
