Police recovered the body of a 12-year-old student from a madrasa in the Shonir Akhra area of Kadamtali in the capital on Monday. The deceased was identified as Naeem Islam Sheikh, a student of Rauzatul Ulum Hafizia Noorani Madrasa.
According to Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Amzad Hossain of Kadamtali Police Station, police recovered the body from the third floor of the madrasa at approximately 3:30pm. The body was subsequently sent to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for a post-mortem examination.
The SI stated that police attended the scene after being informed by the madrasa teachers. Upon arrival, they found the child’s body lying on the floor. The actual cause of death will be determined once the autopsy report is available.
Quoting the madrasa teachers, the SI further mentioned that the student entered the bathroom before the Zuhr prayers. After receiving no response despite repeated calls, the teachers broke down the door and reportedly found him hanging from a clothes hanger, with his panjabi wrapped around his neck.
The teachers then brought the body down themselves. Police are currently investigating whether there are any other factors involved in the incident.
Naeem’s mother, Nazma Akhter, told reporters at the hospital that the family hails from Moshan village in Uzirpur Upazila, Barishal, and currently resides in a rented house in the Muradpur area of Kadamtali. Naeem’s father is Babu Sheikh.
Naeem was the elder of two brothers, both of whom studied and resided at the Rayerbag Rauzatul Ulum Hafizia Noorani Madrasa. Nazma Akhter said a madrasa teacher called her in the afternoon to report that Naeem was ill. However, upon reaching the madrasa, the parents found their son dead.
The mother claimed that during a visit last Friday, Naeem wanted to tell her something but was unable to do so because a teacher named Zakaria was present. “My son cannot commit suicide. There is something else behind this,” she said, urging the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
