A court in Dhaka has placed a student on a five-day remand in connection with the death of fellow student whose hanging body was recovered from a madrasa in the capital’s Banasree area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibuzzaman passed the order on Thursday after Sub-Inspector Md Saiful Islam of Ramna Police Station, the investigation officer in the case, produced the accused before the court and prayed for a seven-day remand.
The state lawyer Omar Faruk Faruki confirmed the court’s decision.
The remand petition stated that preliminary investigations found evidence of the suspect’s involvement, and his interrogation is necessary to unearth the mystery behind the incident and identify others potentially involved. It was noted that no lawyer represented the accused during the hearing, according to court sources.
After hearing the submission, the court granted a five-day remand.
Police arrested the accused Md Shihab Hossain, 20, from Khakchhara village in Bera upazila of Pabna district on Wednesday.
According to case documents, the body of a student identified as Md Abdullah was recovered on Tuesday from the washroom of Alokito Quran International Hifz Madrasah in Banasree under Ramna Police Station.
Police said the body was found hanging with a towel (gamcha) tied around his neck.
During the inquest, investigators reported the presence of what they described as “abnormal signs” on the body.
Following initial questioning, madrasa authorities allegedly informed police about Shihab’s possible involvement in prior incidents involving other students, after which he reportedly went into hiding.
The victim’s mother Tuku Ara Khatun filed a murder case with Ramna Police Station naming Shihab and unidentified persons as accused.
