The Madhyapara stone mine in Parbatipur upazila of Dinajpur has been closed indefinitely after workers expressed fear following a series of recent earthquakes.
Mine authorities took the decision around 10pm on Sunday.
Sources at the mine said repeated tremors across the country and reports of casualties had created anxiety among underground workers. Following discussions between the mine management and the Belarusian contracting company, authorities agreed to suspend operations.
On Sunday morning, workers scheduled for the underground shift refused to enter the mine. The authorities immediately informed Petrobangla, and after Petrobangla’s instructions arrived, a tripartite meeting decided to grant workers leave until further notice.
Madhyapara stone mine managing director DM Zobaid Hossain confirmed to the media that operations had been halted due to earthquake-related panic among workers.
