A man identified by police as a listed top criminal was hacked to death by unidentified assailants in Noakhali’s Begumganj on Monday morning.
The victim, Fakhrul Islam Manju, also known as “Boli”, 25, was the son of Rohan Mia from Ward-9 of Chaumuhani municipality’s Hajipur area.
The attack took place around the entrance of Mandar Bari in Ward-1 of Hajipur Union, where Manju had been standing when a group of assailants launched a sudden assault.
Witnesses said the attackers ensured his death before fleeing the scene. Police arrived shortly afterward.
According to residents and police, Manju was a known criminal in the area and was included in the government’s list of top offenders. He had multiple cases lodged against him at Begumganj Model Police Station, including murder and extortion. He was also wanted in two arrest warrants, along with several other allegations.
Begumganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge M R Bari said the body will be sent to Noakhali General Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
“An investigation is underway to identify who carried out the killing and what prompted it,” the officer-in-charge said.
